Fravert Celebrates 80 Years of Helping People Find Their Way
Birmingham-based signage and wayfinding company marks eight decades of growth, innovation, and partnership
Birmingham, AL, February 20th 2026
Fravert, a leading signage, wayfinding, design, and install company headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, is celebrating 80 years in business, marking a milestone defined by steady progress, enduring client relationships, and a commitment to helping people find their way, both literally and figuratively.
Founded in 1946 as a lighting and maintenance company, Fravert has grown into a full-service signage partner serving healthcare systems, multifamily developments, higher education, corporate, and entertainment across the Southeast and beyond. Over eight decades, the company has continually expanded its capabilities while remaining rooted in the values that shaped its earliest days.
Today, Fravert makes it easier for customers by handling the whole job from start to finish. From early budgeting and figuring out the best way to build something, through design, fabrication, and installation, clients work with one team they know and trust. Keeping everything under one roof helps keep projects moving, and makes sure everyone stays on the same page from the first conversation to the final install.
“One of the most defining moments for Fravert was the decision to begin manufacturing our own signage,” said Richard Rayburn, President of Fravert. “That shift set the trajectory for everything that followed, from greater quality control to becoming a true end-to-end partner for our clients.”
Fravert’s evolution has been marked by several key milestones, including the move into in-house exterior sign manufacturing in the mid-1990s and a major facility expansion in 2012 that added more than 22,000 square feet of fabrication and design space. In 2017, the company completed its transition to a fully comprehensive signage provider with the introduction of ADA-compliant interior signage production.
“Bringing interior signage and wayfinding in-house allowed us to offer a true one-stop solution,” added Thomas Hugghins, Director of Business Development. “Design, manufacturing, project management, and installation all under one roof. It gave our clients confidence and consistency at a critical point in their projects.”
Over the years, Fravert’s work has become part of the everyday landscape across Birmingham and the Southeast. From iconic cultural landmarks and healthcare campuses to major urban developments, the company’s signage can be found on recent projects such as Children’s Healthcare of Alabama, Birmingham’s Protective Stadium, The Alabama Theatre, Google Building Atlanta, University of Mississippi, Nashville Yards, and beyond.
Over the past eight decades, the signage and wayfinding industry has changed a lot, moving from simple signs on bare walls to environments that help shape how people experience a space. As Fravert heads into its ninth decade, the focus remains the same at its core: growing the right way. That means expanding where it makes sense and building stronger, longer-term relationships with the customers they already serve. “Growth for Fravert isn’t about getting bigger just to get bigger,” said Richard Rayburn. “It’s about understanding what our client needs and building signage that does its job day in and day out, long after we’ve finished the install.”
